HOW VITAL ARE LIBRARIES?
Nau mai / Welcome

LIBRARIES ARE ABOUT FREEDOM; think about Mel Gibson from (1995) Braveheart yelling out a war cry or read it regularly, I will leave that up to you. All around us we have life constraints. Libraries are a place that can give so much freedom, becoming vital to our community's wellbeing.

Freedom to Read, Freedom of Ideas, Freedom of Communication, Freedom of Exploration, Freedom of Experimentation and so much more. They are about education, entertainment and about making safe spaces. Also, they are about breaking barriers with access to information and services for us all. Libraries are vital and the beating hearts of our communities. We all know that words have a quiet power and books connect us all. A book can have a person emotionally moved by concentration, curiosity and adventure at their fingertips. We need to appreciate what we borrow and use from our libraries is a bounty of knowledge and experiences to keep.

I would also like to make a special mention about our library team and recognise them as the versatile, resourceful and helpful people we know them to be.

I will leave you with this question; What other single institution, can do so much good?

FAMILY FUN DAY
Our Family Fun Day event was ENTIRELY FREE! This fantastic local Whānau event took place on the 19th of March at Kowhai Park, Feilding. It was a beautiful blue-sky day at the park, with a big turnout.

Everyone that helped with this event or attended had a smile on their face from the day. We were also blown away by the generosity from businesses and groups that made this day possible. Not to mention the amazing feedback from those who attended.

We will let you in on a little secret. We will be repeating it all again next year on Sunday 17th March 2024.

If you would like to be involved in our next family fun day event. Please contact the event organiser marie.willis@mdc.govt.nz

The intrigue of the final book is dually anticipated, will it answer all our reader questions. This series is a popular read amongst us at the library and there is not too long to wait now for the final book of the stunning Seven Sisters series. 'Atlas - The story of Pa Salt' which will be released on the 11th May 2023.

'The Seven Sisters' is a historical fiction series by Lucinda Riley that covers the lives of six girls who grew up together while explaining what happened to the seventh of these sisters. The girls’ adoptive father raises them to be responsible, but upon his death, he also leaves them clues that help them trace their heritage.

Here is the description in the lead up to the final book....
''All the seven sisters are gathered for the first time, on board the Titan to say a final goodbye to the enigmatic father they loved so dearly. To the surprise of everyone, it is the missing sister who Pa Salt has chosen to entrust with the clue to their pasts. But for every truth revealed, another question emerges. The sisters must confront the idea that their adored father was someone they barely knew. And, even more shockingly, that the secrets of his past may still have consequences for them today.'

LIBRARY TIP

If you are not sure which books to grab, look for books with duplicate copies on the shelves. It's pretty easy to scan for them. If the library has ordered duplicate copies, it usually means, it's a book that is popular or considered a great book by the library team.

Download our library app and easily manage your account. You can search our catalogue, place holds, even check due dates and renew items instantly. Search for Manawatū District Libraries in Google Play or Apple Store. You will need your Library card number at the ready and your pin.
GOODBEHERE ST.

Does this street view look familiar. It's where the library currently calls home while the Community Hub Library redevelopment is undertaken. We are not sure what year this photo was taken but if you know when D.E.K.A was locally in town you will have a some idea.

APRIL SPECIAL MENTIONS
BEYOND THE WAND: THE MAGIC AND MAYHEM OF GROWING UP A WIZARD.
AUTHOR TOM FELTON

Draco Malfoy was always my favourite Harry Potter character - mainly due to Tom Felton's portrayal in the film's so I was excited to read his book. Honestly, I was a bit dubious as I didn't think his life had been particularly 'dramatic' or exciting as many autobiographies I have chosen to read but overall, I was pleasantly surprised. While not filled with great drama or challenges I appreciated his honest reflections on his mental health and the struggles growing up as a child actor. The best part of this book was by far to anecdotes from filming the Harry Potter series. His recollections had me laughing out loud at times and I enjoyed the pace and length of chapters making it a quick and easy read.
Thank you, Liz.

MISCHIEVOUS MILLY
AUTHOR NADIA LIM

This is a cute little book. The beginning and the end have real photos of when Milly first became part of the Lim family at Royalburn Station. The illustrations are pretty cute. I'm sure anyone that has ever owned a goat knows what trouble they can be, and Milly is no exception. The book also has a few of Nadia's summer recipes in the back that would be fun to make with kids/grandkids.

Thank you Sue.
