History and Heritage

Manawatu District Libraries holds a strong collection of resources relating to local and family history.

Feilding Star Newspaper, 1882 - 1934. Copies held on microfilm. You can also search The Star on Papers Past ( Later Feilding newspapers are held as scrapbooks and hard copies.

Historic Photographs. The Library holds over two thousand photographs of Feilding and surrounding districts. These can be searched here ( or as hard copies in the Library. A family history database available free on Library computers. Ancestry Library Edition is the largest site of its kind with over four billion names worldwide. Please note this link only works on library computers or library Wi-Fi.

Stones Directories. These function in much the same way as a telephone directory and yellow pages, listing street addresses along with occupations. Regions covered are Dunedin, Otago and Southland; Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough & Westland; Wellington, Hawkes Bay & Taranaki. The period covered is from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries. The directories are text searchable on the PC located in the Heritage Room.

New Zealand Cemetery Records. On microfiche, held in our Heritage Room.

Births, Deaths and Marriages Index. On microfiche, held in our Heritage Room. These cover the 1840s through to the 1980s.  You can search for older records online at

Searchable scans of many early New Zealand newspapers. The Feilding Star is covered from 1882 – 1920. An invaluable resource for genealogists and historians.

Cyclopedia of New Zealand -

The Cyclopedia of New Zealand is now available online. These six volumes were published between 1897 and 1908, and present a glimpse of life in New Zealand at the turn of the twentieth century. There are around 20,000 people profiled in these texts, many of with biographical notes and photographs, providing a snapshot of their activities and achievements.

The six volumes are:

Volume 1. Wellington Provincial District. Published 1897
Volume 2. Auckland Provincial District. Published 1902
Volume 3. Canterbury Provincial District. Published 1903
Volume 4. Otago and Southland Provincial Districts. Published 1905
Volume 5. Nelson, Marlborough and Westland Provincial Districts. Published 1906
Volume 6. Taranaki, Hawke's Bay and Wellington Provincial Districts. Published 1908

Births Deaths and Marriages -

On the Birth, Death and Marriage Historical Records website, you can search New Zealand Government records for births, deaths and marriages (BDM).

The historic data available for you to search is limited so that information relating to people who might still be alive can be protected. Information available includes:

• Births that occurred at least 100 years ago
• Stillbirths that occurred at least 50 years ago
• Marriages and eventually Civil Unions that occurred 80 years ago
• Deaths that occurred at least 50 years ago or the deceased's date of birth was at least 80 years ago.

Feilding and District Community Archive (Coach House, 121 South Street, Feilding)

The Feilding & District Community Archive plays an important role in receiving and cataloguing donated community records, from 1875 to the present day.

Archives Central (40 Bowen Street, Feilding)

Archives Central is a collaborative enterprise to digitise and store the records of seven central North Island councils. These are: Wanganui District Council, Ruapehu District Council, Rangitikei District Council, Manawatu District Council, Horowhenua District Council, Palmerston North City Council and Horizon Regional Council.
